DeSOx SCRUBBER SYSTEM IN OPEN LOOP, CLOSED LOOP AND HYBRID – INDIVIDUAL WAYS OF DESULFURIZATION TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND PROTECT ENVIRONMENT
Since 2005, new regulations have been placed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the control and limit of sulfur emissions by maritime vessels throughout the globe. More and more harbours and national waters are adopting the new regulations, obligating the marine vessels to make use of scrubbers or turn to low sulfur fuel.

PRIMARINE scrubber systems are high efficiency yet simple:
The scrubber system removes besides SO2 also soot, ash and particles, heavy metals and poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), thus achieving the advantages of cleaner and black smoke free exhaust emissions.
Achieving the required sulphur emission limits with minimum space usage on the ship, making it easy to install scrubber systems in newbuildings or retrofits.
High quality duplex stainless steel provides high reliability to corrosive fluids and resists high temperatures. The system can thus be operated in dry mode, where the hot exhaust gases are not washed and led through the scrubber tower, which then acts as a silencer only.
Optimized spray pattern in the scrubber tower due to special designed nozzles, results in less water consumption and minimal power consumption by the pumps.
A high efficiency droplet and soot separator, also called demister, is installed in top of the scrubber tower in order to avoid wash water droplets and particles being carried out through the funnel. This leads to a significantly reduced visible plume.
The automated control system, programmed by PRIAMRINE optimizes the power of pumps and controls the automatically driven valves in the scrubber system to ensure less energy consumption and maximizes efficiency.
With PRIMARINE you get one of the first supplier, who has – in addition to the new building of scrubber systems – gained valuable experiences in retrofitting and optimizing of existing scrubber systems.
PRIMARINE scrubber towers as I-Type and U-Type can be tailored for one or multiple engines. Our scrubbers can utilize all kinds of neutralizing agents such as sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), magnesium hydroxide or sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking powder) and meets all regulatory requirements.
By replacing the silencer of the exhaust gas pipeline with a PRIMARINE I-Type scrubber (Inline scrubber), we are able to minimize the space usage which is paramount for cruise and ro-ro vessels.
In addition, by installing the optimal spray levels with nozzles, designed by PRIMARINE, we are also able to achieve smallest droplets which increases the reaction surface.
In order to avoid any backflows of wash water to the exhaust gas pipeline, a customized rain cap is installed, with respect to avoiding high backpressure in the scrubber tower.
The U-Type scrubber tower can also be installed in maritime vessels with larger space usage allowance.
While the U-Type will occupy more space than the I-Type, it offers an unique advantage in the scrubber tower efficiency.
The design of the U-Type offers the opportunity to install an early spray level for quenching the exhaust gas, dropping the temperature and achieving higher capture efficiency.
All PRIMARINE scrubber systems and equipment are followed by detailed drawings, as long as, the necessary approval certification from multiple certification societies.

OPEN LOOP SCRUBBER
The open loop scrubber is the most frequently used scrubber system at open sea. Instead of being re-used, the process water is discharged directly back to the sea while complying fully with the IMO regulations.
The open loop scrubber principle rests on the use of seawater’s alkalinity as the capturing agent of SOx, including heavy metals and particles. Monitoring equipment is installed before and after the use of the sea water to measure the levels of alkalinity, salinity, turbidity and PH of the wash water. A continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) is used to control the exhaust gas emissions and to regulate the scrubbing process.
PRIMARINE scrubber systems installation takes into account the limitations of space also potential developments, ensuring the possibility of upgrading the scrubber system to closed loop or hybrid loop, should the need arises.
CLOSED LOOP SCRUBBER
In closed loop operation the scrubbers recirculates the process wash water enriched with i.E. Caustic Soda and does not discharge any water to the sea.
This mode of operation is required in ECA waters and in specific areas such as harbours, estuaries and other restricted areas.
The used washing water is led via a process tank through the process water treatment system (PWTS), where it is separated from sludge, solids and oil. Only the cleaned drainage water is discharged directly overboard in full compliance with IMO regulations and without harming the environment.
While a closed loop system will require more space usage than an open loop, PRIMARINE great care in order to achieve minimum space usage, making a hybrid option available.
CLEAN OPEN LOOP SCRUBBER
The clean open loop scrubber system can be operated in clean open and normal open loop. This system is equipped with a waste water treatment system (WWTS).
During normal open loop mode WWTS will be bypassed and the untreated waste water will be discharged into the sea directly as is usual with open loop scrubbers. If the ship enters an area (e.g. in ports or coastal areas), where the waste water should be cleaned before discharged, the WWTS can be operated.
Special filters inside the WWTS are able to clean the large amount of waste water from particles and oils and thus also ensure a significantly reduced oil film on the water surface when the ship is in port.
PRIMARINE hybrid loop scrubber system offers great flexibility to the owners, providing the choice of switching between open loop or clean open loop on any given time, complying with the IMO regulations while achieving minimum operational cost.
The Triloop® system is a combination of all three systems. This is where open loop, clean open loop and closed loop meet.
The scrubber system can drive all modes and thus combines the advantages of all systems. With this system, the ship is ready for the future and well prepared for the upcoming restrictions.
The system is controlled in automatic mode by PRIMARINE special designed PLC (Control System). When the operation modes are changed, the system carries out this change fully automatically.
Automatic adaptation towards the load of the engine and environmental conditions guarantees maximum efficiency through minimal pump energy consumption.
